Mercenaries are Magic's hired blades: fighters, guns-for-hire and opportunists who sell their loyalty to whoever pays. Across the Multiverse they appear in ragged companies, from street-level enforcers to elite soldiers, usually in Black or Red where self-interest and aggression thrive. Their flavor is transactional — a contract, a debt, a job — and they rarely fight for ideals.
Typal Mercenary decks tend to be aggressive and attrition-based, leaning on cheap creatures and incremental advantages. Black supplies recursion and removal, while Red adds speed and direct damage. Because the type rewards committing to the board, such decks often mix in payoffs that scale with the number of Mercenaries, and flexible utility creatures fill out the curve. The result is a deck that trades resources efficiently and closes games before opponents stabilize.
