Indestructible is a static ability. A permanent with indestructible can't be destroyed by effects that say destroy, and lethal damage doesn't destroy it either. The reminder text makes this clear: damage and effects that say destroy don't destroy the permanent. It still can be exiled, sacrificed, returned to its owner's hand or library, or have its toughness reduced to 0.
In play, indestructible makes a creature very hard to remove in combat, since it can attack and block without dying from damage. Indestructible artifacts and enchantments shrug off destroy-based removal, so opponents need other answers like exile or sacrifice effects. That resilience can buy time, protect key pieces, and force opponents to find specific answers.
