Vigilance is a keyword ability that changes what happens when a creature attacks. Normally, when a creature is declared as an attacker, it becomes tapped. A creature with vigilance ignores that: attacking doesn't cause it to tap. It still attacks and deals combat damage as usual, but it stays untapped.
That matters because an untapped creature can still block on the opponent's turn. A vigilant creature can attack on your turn and then be available to defend you right away, so you don't have to choose between pressuring opponents and protecting yourself. It can also keep using abilities that require tapping. The reminder text on cards spells it out: attacking doesn't cause this creature to tap.
