Merfolk are Magic's blue-aligned aquatic folk, a creature type that turns up across the multiverse: coral cities and deep trenches on Dominaria, river networks on Ixalan, cold seas on Lorwyn, and the plane-spanning oceans of Zendikar. They are usually portrayed as communal, curious, and deeply tied to water, whether as warriors, scholars, traders, or mystics. That flexible identity lets them fit a range of blue decks, from aggressive schools to patient control builds.
Typal Merfolk decks typically lean on synergy: lords that pump the whole team, cheap evasive bodies, and effects that reward having many Merfolk on the battlefield. Blue's card draw, counterspells, and bounce spells support a tempo plan, while some builds go wider with tokens or tap/untap tricks. Because the tribe is so spread out, decks often mix eras and planes, but the core play pattern stays similar: establish a board of Merfolk, protect it, and win through incremental advantage or an unblockable swarm.
