Amass is a keyword action that builds up one creature instead of many. When a card tells you to amass, you put that many +1/+1 counters on an Army you control, and that Army also becomes the creature type named in the ability — Amass Orcs, Amass Goblins, and so on. If you don't control an Army yet, you first create a 0/0 black creature token of that type, then put the counters on it, so it arrives as a real body rather than something that dies on the spot.
The payoff is a creature that grows tall rather than wide: every amass adds to the same Army, so counters pile up on a single threat that keeps the type it gained. Because a 0/0 Army needs counters just to survive, each amass gives you both a creature and a bonus in one step.
