Praetors are Magic's archetypal tyrants: imposing overseers who rule through hierarchy, flesh, industry, and fear. Across the game's worlds they appear as faction leaders and would-be gods, and their cards tend to feel like command pieces rather than disposable soldiers. The type's identity is heavily black, though individual Praetors can pull in artifacts, counters, sacrifice, or reanimation themes. They are creatures first, and almost every one is a rare or mythic headline act.
Typal Praetor decks usually play as high-end midrange or control shells. They lean on black's strengths—attrition, recursion, and taxing effects—while using the Praetors themselves as finishers or engines that take over once they land. Because the catalog's Praetors are all creatures and all rare or mythic, typal lists often run support, ramp, and protection to make each threat count, rather than flooding the board with cheap copies.
