A creature is a permanent type. You can play a creature card only during your main phase, when the stack is empty, and only on your turn. Once it resolves, it enters the battlefield under your control and stays there. Creatures have power and toughness; they can attack and block, and they are affected by summoning sickness unless they have haste.
A creature dealt damage equal to or greater than its toughness is destroyed and goes to the graveyard. Creatures form the backbone of most decks: they apply pressure, block opposing threats, and often carry abilities that generate value or close out games. Decks may build around a few powerful creatures or swarm with many smaller ones.
