Connive is a keyword action that a creature can be told to do. To have a creature connive, you draw a card, then discard a card. If the card you discarded is a nonland card, put a +1/+1 counter on that creature. If you discarded a land card, the creature gets no counter, but you still drew and discarded. Some effects let you choose to have a creature connive, and some trigger automatically when a creature enters or deals combat damage.
In play, connive is a small engine: it filters your draws, fills your graveyard, and can slowly grow creatures into bigger threats. Because the counter only appears when you discard a nonland card, connive rewards decks that can spare extra spells or creatures. It also works well with effects that care about +1/+1 counters or cards in the graveyard.
